Project outline

The overall intention of this project is to make Invisible People 'Visible'. 3rdthought have performed Invisible People in a number of locations over the last few years and will be taking it to Berlin in September 2016. With the funding from the United St Saviour's Charity we are planning to make Invisible People more visible by:

  • Collaborating with two local organisations: The Cinema Museum, and The Brunel Museum to develop materials that they and 3rdthought can use;
  • Creating opportunities for guest artistes from The Cinema Museum and The Brunel Museum to perform with 3rdthought in collaborative projects;
  • To increase the repertoire of 3rdthought, particularly around local topics and for children.

Laurie Marsh and The Cinema Museum

Laurie Marsh is an industry veteran with a long and distinguished career in cinema and theatre ownership as well as film making. Laurie was born in Lambeth and grew up in Southwark. Cinemas, Theatres and Music Halls in Southwark had a great impact on his development and future career. He acquired the Classic circuit in 1971 and expanded it with much of the Essoldo group. He, in association with Brian Rix and Ray Cooney, acquired and ran several West End theatres. A former President of the Cinema Exhibitors Association, he supports British Cinema and Television Veterans and the Cinema Museum.

With the help of London South Bank University we have filmed Laurie creating some material for use with Invisible People (which you can see on our video gallery), some magic tricks (which are on our magic page) and also some 'trailers' which will be used by the Cinema Museum:

Robert Hulse and The Brunel Museum

Robert Hulse directs London’s Brunel Museum, which is housed in Brunel’s original Thames Tunnel engine house and winner of The Queen’s Award in 2010. He has worked in education and museums for 20 years and has taught and lectured at numerous universities in the United Kingdom and internationally. He is co-author of The Brunels’ Tunnel. He worked with the Greater London Authority to organise the first public walks through the Thames Tunnel in 145 years.

With the help of London South Bank University and the Brunel Museum, we have filmed Robert creating some material for use with Invisible People (which you can see on our video gallery), and Jane Monahan (formerly Schools & Families Education Office at the Sir John Soane's Museum) explaining how we can use simple science demonstrations as material for both the Brunel Museum and 3rdthought, especially for children and young people. These films will now form part of the teaching material for staff at the Brunel Museum and for 3rdthought to expand their repertoire.

Outcomes

As a result of the funding we have been able to produce increased Intergenerational performance material appropriate to the collections of each museum & suitable for continued use in community festivals & events by 3rdthought, The Cinema Museum & Brunel Museum

We have also been invited to be part of the Brunel Museum's contribution to the Thames Festival, and will be appearing at 'Isambard Brunel dans son cabaret on the 12th & 13th September.

We will also be assisting the Cinema Museum during the London Film Festival in October.
